About SMPB, Haryana

The State Medicinal Plants Board (SMPB), Haryana, established on 13th August 2002 under the Department of AYUSH, functions in accordance with the guidelines of the National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB), Government of India.

The Board promotes the conservation, cultivation, and sustainable management of medicinal plants while enhancing farmers’ livelihoods through herbal farming. SMPB undertakes several initiatives, including the establishment of school and institutional herbal gardens, nurseries, and awareness programs such as seminars, training sessions, and national campaigns like “Ashwagandha – A Health Promoter.”

With a focus on biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource use, the Board encourages cultivation of medicinal plants on private, community, and waste lands to meet the growing market demand and reduce pressure on wild resources. SMPB is also working towards strengthening forward and backward linkages, ensuring market access for growers, and developing post-harvest management systems for medicinal plants in Haryana.


The working of the board are operation under the control of Nodal Officer appointed by Director General AYUSH, Haryana for better implementations of schemes and working of staff.

Our Vision

The promotion of medicinal plants in the state aims to create a sustainable, health-oriented, and economically beneficial ecosystem. This includes capacity building, implementing various schemes, and offering subsidies to encourage the cultivation of medicinal plants in Haryana.

Our Mission

  • Promotion of Medicinal Plants: This initiative focuses on encouraging the cultivation of medicinal plants across the state.
  •  Good Agricultural Practices (GAP): By adopting Good Agricultural Practices in the Cultivation of Medicinal Plants, Ensuring Long-term Productivity improving the quality of medicinal plants, and conserving the environment.
  •  Conservation of Medicinal Plant Resources: This involves the ex-situ and in-situ conservation of critical medicinal plant species, as well as the rehabilitation of their natural habitats. The goal is to protect and preserve these valuable plant resources for future generations and ensure the sustainability of their use in healthcare and other industries.
  •  Quality Control: To Educate Farmers On The Standards And Quality Control Measures Required For Medicinal Plants that Meet Market And Industry Requirements.
  •  Market Linkages: To establishing connections between farmers and markets, providing them with essential information on market demands, pricing, and value addition processes.
  •  Research And Development: To Encourage Participation In Research And Development Activities Related To Medicinal Plants, Fostering Innovation And Improvement In Cultivation Techniques.
  • Promotion of Government Schemes: To Informing Farmers About Various Government Schemes, Subsidies, And Support Available For The Cultivation Of Medicinal Plants.
  • Economic Empowerment: To Provide Farmers With The Skills And Information Needed To Increase Their Income Through The Cultivation And Sale Of Medicinal Plants. By offering training in best agricultural practices, marketing strategies, and value addition techniques, the goal is to help farmers improve their productivity and profitability.
  • Knowledge Enhancement: Through training sessions, workshops, and educational materials, to improving The Knowledge of Farmers about the Identification, Cultivation, And Harvesting of Medicinal Plants.

Our Objective

  •  Assessment of demand/supply position relating to medicinal plants both within the country and abroad.
  •  Preserve and protect medicinal plants species.
  •  Encourage the farmers to grow medicinal plants by providing financial support, technical guidance.
  •  Provide training programs for farmers on cultivation, harvesting and post-harvest management of medicinal plants.
  • Ensure the fair market opportunities to make medicinal plants farming a sustainable livelihood option.
  •  Create a strong supply chains by connecting cultivation with herbal, pharmaceutical and Ayurvedic industries.
  •  Increase the public awareness of the health benefits of medicinal plants.
  •  Promote research to identify high value medicinal plants.
  •  Provide guidance in the formulation of proposals, schemes and programmes to be taken by individuals/ Agencies having access to land for cultivation and infrastructure for collection, storage and transportation of medicinal plants.
  • Monitor,coordinate and evaluate medicinal plant development schemes and projects funded by central and state government, their organizations and other institution.
  •  Educating general public, students and young generations about the uses, benefits and importance of medicinal plants in their day – to – day life.

SMPB's Haryana Proposals

National Medicinal Plants Board (NMPB) in order to promote the cultivation, usage, and awareness of Ashwagandha (Withania somnifera) due to its high medicinal value, particularly in traditional Ayurvedic medicine had launched National Campaign on Ashwagandha in Year 2024.
